If you can catch The Lone Ranger you won’t regret it.. It’s a great film. It was Johnny Depp’s movie. Depp brings an exciting and eccentric acting toolkit to play; making Tonto a crazy daredevil, spiritual guide, sometimes unreliable narrator, shaman/mentor to Army Hammer’s Lone Ranger. I credit Johnny Depp, the writers and directors for coming up with original take for unusual supporting sidekick character to the stories narrator and mentor to the hero and eyes to the audience. I put Tonto on the list of  interesting, unique, oddball outcast that are the stock and trade of Johnny Depp’s such as Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Ichabod Crane, Hunter S. Thompson, Sweeney Todd and Barnabas Collins and many others. Army was a great Lone Ranger capturing the square jawed white hat wearing hero. When I saw The Lone Ranger riding Silver and then hearing the legendary William Tell overture I got shivers down my spine; every time I hear that music and see The Lone Ranger riding Silver it brings up childhood memories and fantasies the legendary masked man.

The filmmakers put a new coat of polish on the old West hero keeping the elements of the original story while adding a new and unique spin making everything new again.

This time Tonto and The Lone Ranger were up against a trifecta of villains and the railroad and silver. The first adversary was the scary, evil grinning, disfigured, heart eating, ugly outlaw Butch Cavendish wonderfully played by the same time scary and menacing character actor William Fichtner. He was the the black hat wearing villain of the piece. The true mastermind villain was played by Tom Wilkinson from Batman Begins slowly showing his true colors to the audience. The final villainous character was grizzled and power-hungry Confederate general played by Barry Pepper.

Nothing against The Pirates Of the Caribbean but I enjoyed this movie more than all four Jack Sparrow outings put together.

I shouldn’t forget to add Helena Bonham Carter or fourth time in a Johnny Depp picture. Her character Red a brothel owner with an Ivory artificial leg hiding a six shooter added some color and help our heroes saved the day. Any role she plays adds to the story a unique and eccentric layer to this story that makes it that much more interesting.

This summer my favorite movies so far are Man Of Steel, The Lone Ranger and Star Trek: Into the Darkness. If I was picking members for my own superhero team from this summer’s movies the first three slots would go to Superman, Tonto and The Lone Ranger. The tryouts are still open Wolverine, giant robots and the heroes from Kick-Ass I hope you guys make it in. Right now Capt. Kirk and Spock are keeping your seats warm.
